Water Rocketry. Well, well, well. Who said we are all turning into unimaginative zombies?The apple guy said long ago,

        "Actioni contrariam semper et æqualem esse reactionem: sive corporum duorum actiones in se mutuo semper esse æquales et in partes contrarias dirigi".

Here is one more event which works on the same principle. Show us what you can with an empty bottle, a generous quantity of H2O and an air pump. Making what everybody else has is not difficult. Making what others have not thought of, is. So come and show us your design skills. And the one who can out do all others in matters of speed and distance wins. Bona fortuna!! 

The participants need to design and fabricate a multi-stage (2 or more stages) water rocket using standard commercially available plastic cola bottles. Your water rocket will be tested based on the maximum distance it travels with a given maximum launching pressure of 80 psi.

Single stage water rockets are allowed and will be evaluated for innovative concept or design and volumetric efficiency. It is known that a 2 Lt PET bottle need not be "designed" to act as a water rocket. We want you to unleash the creative genius in you! Your rocket could include special landing mechanisms which will be greatly appreciated and also fetch you bonus points.

The quantity of water used for launch will be of your choice though mathematics has proven that its flight is best when it is 1/3rd full. The launch pad and launching mechanism's diagrams and specifications are given in the subsequent tabs.  

  • A team can have a maximum of 3 members. Members from different colleges are allowed to form a team. However you must produce a valid ID card at the time of the event.
  • You will have to launch your own Water Rockets. No support will be given by Kurukshetra Team except for the launch pad and launching mechanism. The launch pad and launching mechanism's specifications and diagrams will be put up soon.
  • No other form of driving mechanism will be allowed other than jet propulsion.
  • You are not allowed to use existing kits.
  • Your rockets will be inspected by the Kurukshetra Team and then certified for launch.
  • You cannot bring your own launching mechanism. The launch pad and launching mechanism will be provided by the Kurukshetra Team only.
  • A maximum of 80 psi will be allowed.
  • You will be given 2 trials and a maximum of 2 launches per trial.
  • Judging will be based on: Distance travelled, Time of Flight, Stability, Design and innovation and Volumetric Efficiency,
  • In all cases the judges' decision will be final.


  • This event consists of two rounds.
  • Each round is eliminatory.
  • Round 1:
  1. Maximum distance travelled by the rocket for a given standard pressure of 50 psi ( value is subject to change) will be considered.
  2. Rocket design and stability will also be evaluated.
  3. Only one launch/trail will be allowed.
  • Round 2:
  1. Time of flight of the rocket will be considered.
  2. An interview with the judges will be conducted.
  3. Average of two launches/trail will be taken.
